College Update

SCC is a tobacco-free campus.  Here is some new information regarding smoking bans from the School of Public Health of the University of California, Berkeley:

Smoking Bans Save Lives

Hospital admissions for heart attacks dropped by 8% in New York State in 2004, the year after a comprehensive smoking ban went into effect, according to a recent report in the American Journal of Public Health.  That number takes into account improved medical care and other factors.  Similarly, Ireland’s heart attack rate fell by 11% the year after the introduction of its ban on smoking in public places that started in 2004. The SCC Web site has undergone a face-lift. Additional links have been added to the home page, important student tools are grouped on the right side of the screen, and other pages have been modified to reflect the results of the fall branding workshop, facts gleaned from statistics, and feedback from the SCC community. This is the beginning of many changes that will take place over the coming year. The Web site will undergo a complete redesign in 2008-09.

Wanted: Creative writing and photography. Mid Rivers Review, SCC's literary magazine, is accepting submissions of poetry, short fiction, or B/W photography until Jan. 31. Contact Teddy Norris at x8407 for more information. Entry guidelines.

The college will be closed Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
