College Update
 

BarnesCare will administer flu vaccinations from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 1, in HUM 102. Employees, spouses, and dependents who are at least 18 years old are eligible to receive the vaccination for $25 per shot. Make checks payable to BarnesCare, or bring exact amount of cash (they will be unable to make change). To sign up, contact Jessica James at x8393.

The Building Community With Off-Campus Students Web conference is scheduled from noon-1:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 14, in SSB 1407. This teleconference will explore the challenges unique to commuter students, review best practices for helping commuters succeed, and examine intervention strategies that can have the greatest impact on student success. New technology maintenance window. When changes are necessary for the upkeep of the SCC network or servers, the work will be performed from 6 a.m.-1 p.m. on Sundays. Network Computing will try to schedule necessary work during this maintenance window and notify users as far in advance as possible. In addition, Network Computing is working with college departments to create a calendar of critical dates to avoid. This will help minimize the impact of downtimes on students, faculty, and staff.

SCC’s 2008 United Way campaign met and exceeded its goal of $10,000. Thanks to the generosity of the SCC family, $10,246.92 in donations and pledges was collected.

Student gifts enhance geology studies at SCC. Edith-Ann Zecca and Tom Nelson recently donated minerals and fossils for the science department’s geology collection.  More.

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Monday-Tuesday, Oct. 22-23, in SC 205-206.

The SCC Social Science Society will present the film "Who Killed the Electric Car?" at 1 p.m. and 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, in the SSB auditorium.

See You at the Fair at noon Thursday, Oct. 25, in the SC Private Dining Room. In 1904, St. Louis hosted the World’s Fair and the Olympics. More.

Target: JFK at noon, Thursday, Nov. 1, in SC 205. This November will mark the 44th anniversary of the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. Many people still question what really happened in Dallas on that day. More.

A faculty music recital featuring Erin Haupt and Catherine Murray will be held at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 27, in the FAB theater.

A Family History Workshop will be held from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, in SC 205. The workshop is for beginners as well as experienced genealogists. It will be led by Michael John Neill, a faculty member of the Genealogical Institute of Mid-America at the University of Illinois-Springfield and a nationally known genealogist. The registration fee is $20 for the general public and $10 for SCC students, faculty, and staff. An optional catered lunch is available for $7.50. “Think Smart” training sessions will be presented by Bob Gill, SCC instructional media manager.

Using Microsoft Publisher to Create Classroom Materials will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, Oct. 22, in LRC 238. This easy-to-use desktop publishing software will allow you to create high-quality printed materials for educational use including syllabi, handouts, and more. Join Bob for a demonstration and discussion on using MS Publisher to improve the classroom experience.

Worth a Thousand Words: How to Incorporate Graphics/Images Into Your Teaching will be held at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 30, in LRC 238. In this session, Bob will talk about digital cameras, scanning, archiving images, and presentation software.

The last day to drop a fall credit class and receive a “W” is Friday, Oct. 26.

The Returning Learners Workshop will be held from 8:45 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday-Wednesday, Nov. 5-7. This free three-day workshop will help current and future returning learners combat their fears and overcome their unique challenges. More.

The Student Nurse Organization (SNO) is sponsoring a Halloween food drive through Oct. 31. Canned goods and other non-perishables can be dropped off in the bins/boxes in various locations around campus. The items will be donated to Sts. Joachim and Ann Care Services in St. Charles County.
