Supported Software and Non-Supported Software

As with hardware, when the software installed on a computer is out of date, servicing it becomes more difficult and time consuming. Beyond a certain point, technical assistance can no longer be obtained from vendors; compatibility problems arise. For this reason, there are also minimum supportability standards for computer operating systems and commercial software.

Commercial Software

Network computing supports all current versions of Microsoft Windows and Mac OSX operating systems.  Faculty and staff should consult the director of network computing before purchasing software to be installed on their desktop machines. In order to comply with software licensing regulations, a network computing staff member will install only legally licensed software, freeware.

Microsoft Software

SCC has negotiated a special software agreement with Microsoft that provides a license to all SCC faculty and staff for home use of Microsoft Office. Information regarding this agreement and instructions for obtaining the software can be found on the SCC Intranet (SCC username and password required).

Obsolete Software

As software companies release newer versions of software, the old versions eventually become obsolete for the following reasons:

  1. The software vendor no longer offers technical support for problems encountered.
  2. The files or documents created by the software may be in a format no longer recognized by current software, making them un-sharable.
  3. The software will no longer run under current computer operating systems.

The network computing department does not support software that falls into these categories. If a user or department needs assistance with such software, the network computing department will recommend a currently supported software package that will perform the required functions and assist the user in making the transition to the new software package.
