Glossary
-
Cell wall- this structure is found outside the
plasma membrane. Cell walls are found in plant cells, bacterial cells and fungal
cells. Each phylum has it's own characteristic chemical composition.
-
Central vacuole- is a large membrane
bound structure found in plants and some fungi. It is used for storage of water
or other substances.
-
Chloroplast- double membrane organelle found in
green parts of plants. It is the site of photosynthesis.
-
Cytoplasm- gel like material of the cell which
contains organelles.
-
Mitochondria- oval shaped double membrane bond
organelle. It is the site of aerobic production of ATP.
-
Nucleolus- this structure is found in the
nucleus and is the site of RNA synthesis
-
Nucleus- double membrane bond structure found
in eukaryotic cells. The nucleus contains the genetic material of the cell.
-
Plasma membrane- this membrane surrounds the
cytoplasm of all cells. It is composed of a phospholipid bilayer with interspaced
proteins.
-
Prokaryote- organisms that do not contain a
nucleus. Bacteria are prokaryotes.
-
Ribosomes- this structure is composted of RNA
and proteins. It is the site of protein synthesis. Ribosomes consists of a small
subunit and a large subunit. Prokaryotic, mitochondria, chloroplast ribosomes
are smaller, than eukaryotic ribosomes.
