Discovery Channel Young Scientist Challenge (grades 5th-8th)
Entries are judged on the scientific merit, originality, and
communication of the project.
Winners of the regional fairs become
nominees for the national Challenge and must complete and return on online
application and essay about their project.
Judges pick the top 400 semifinalists
and 40 finalists. Finalist win an all-expense paid trip to Washington, DC in
October (2005) to compete for a share of over $100,000 in scholarships and
prizes. The top student wins a $15,000 scholarship.

This year a new award with be given at international
Sustainable Development
Award- for ideas that balance the economic and social needs of today with the
environmental needs of tomorrow. The winner(s) will be eligible for 50,000 in
scholarship funds and a trip to Japan’s World Exposition in 2005.
