Interests
- Reading - Although teaching requires me to read a great deal to
prepare for my classes and to do research, no day is complete without at least
setting aside an hour (usually at bedtime) to read for pleasure.
- Writing - Besides teaching, writing is also another
strong passion in my life. This could be writing in my journal,
working on a poem, or creating
a book. Writing a book is arduous work, but when I reach that "zone," I soar
in my imagination.
- Nature - I was raised in the city of St. Louis and
loved the cultural aspects of art museums, symphonies, and great
bookstores. But when I lived in the country
for sixteen years, I realized the importance of simplicity and the
wisdom therein. Whether I was watching deer in the fields, a possum
with her young, the seasonal
changes, or smelling the pungent earth after a spring rain, I began
to know myself. It is while in nature that I can feel the connection
to all life.
- Hiking - In addition to being in nature, it is an
added boon when I hike in the woods, across fields, or follow a winding
creek. Even though I enjoy
some Missouri trails, my biggest thrill is my annual trek to the
Rocky Mountains where I spend a week making my way up 10,000 to
13,000 foot summits. As I stand
above the treeline and look out at the phenomenal vistas, I am infused
with great peace and love.
- Being with friends and family - Meeting friends at outdoor cafes,
especially along Main Street in historical St. Charles, is a wonderful way for me to
spend an afternoon or evening. Great talk and a lot of laughter! My family is also
so very important to me, in particular, my three grown children and my grandchildren.
