What the teacher expects from each student

Attendance Policy

Each student is expected to attend all classes.  The fact that some of the course is group activity makes attendance at class even more important.  If absence is unavoidable, the student is expected to have the textbook material read and any class assignments completed before returning to the next schedule class.  Failure to do this will cause the inability to keep up with the class material being discussed.

DO NOT call or e-mail the teacher to find out what we covered in a class that you missed.  This information should be obtained from the course timetable and/or a classmate.

Course Requirements

Students with special needs:

We all have various channels through which we learn best. SCC has an Office of Accessibility Services that guides, counsels, and assists students with disabilities. It is located in Room 1206 of the Administration Building. It is your responsibility (as the student) to discuss with the instructor during the first week of class anything needed to help you succeed. If you have special needs, please call Pam Bova (636.922.8247) in the Office of Accessibility Services so that your eligibility for services can be determined.

All written work

Chapter Questions / Group Assignments / Article Summaries

All written work for this class must be done using proper grammar and punctuation.  Writing skills are crucial to your future success, and these types of assignments are one way to practice those skills.  Regardless of your personal knowledge of any subject, if you cannot write about it using good writing skills, then no one else can know how much you know about it.

Up to 15% of your assignment grade could be lost if proper writing skills are not demonstrated. If you need writing skills helps, SCC provides an excellent resource for you.  Contact the ACE Center or me if you require assistance in this area.

Chapter Questions:

Write out complete answers to each review question in the text.  Be sure your answer includes enough of the question posed so that I don't have to look at the question in the book to know which one you're answering. This homework is due the week we take the test on the chapter

Article Summaries

Find four (4) articles about Database trends and/or SQL. Write a 1/2-1 page summary of each article (double spaced).

Chapter Exams:

The beginning of many class sessions will be a test. The test is computerized, true/false, multiple choice, and short answer. For each test, you can use your homework (the Chapter Review questions) as a "cheat sheet." Tests cannot be made up, but missing one will not affect your grade, because the lowest grade is thrown out.

Hands-on Assignments:

Hands-on assignments will be assigned most classes. These cannot be made up, but missing one will not affect your grade, because the lowest grade is thrown out.

Final Exam

Your final exam will be hands-on, to add/change/delete records/tables from a database. This will be an open-notes test.
