Text:  George Reynolds, Ethics in Information Technology, Thomson/Course Technology 2003

Objectives:  This course will focus on the theory and practice of computer/business ethics.  The goal of the course is to provide an overview of theories of ethical decision making and methodology for reaching ethical decisions concerning computer and business matters.

Specific Objectives:

The student will be able to:

  • Identify legal and moral aspects of computer, business and information technology
  • Suggest guidelines and criteria for resolving computer and buisness related moral problems.

Attendance and Assignments:

Attendance is mandatory.  New material is covered at each class and missing class material may be difficult to make up.  Therefore missing more than two class weeks may result in an F.  Be on time.  Three tardies or leaving class early will be considered an absence. You are allowed two unexcused absences; more than two will result in a letter grade reduction.  The two most frequent reasons for being fired from employment  are not showing up or showing up late.  Develop good habits at school.  If absence is unavoidable assignments and class work must be made up by next scheduled class period.  Assignments are to be turned in on the due date and will not be counted for credit if late.  If you encounter difficulties please see the instructor during office hours, make an appointment, phone or email.

Grading:

            Class participation (articles, worksheets,

group work, class discussion, case analysis)            30%

            One paper                                                                   10%

            Class presentation                                                     10%

            Two exams 20%/ and final    30%                            50%

Graded papers and exams will be returned within two class periods under normal circumstances..  If unable to take a test please notify instructor prior to test to schedule a makeup. Tests must be made up within a week or will result in a zero.
