GLS 101 -- Course Description & Objectives

Many problems in the US are similar to ones facing the rest of the world. Furthermore, problems in one country or region often affect the entire world. Our global society has become more interconnected than ever. Globalization is the process in which norms and practices are changed away from state-centric values to a common, global, set of values. This class will explore the theme of globalization from a variety of disciplines and points of view.

We will explore the impact of destroying rainforests in South America; the benefits and concerns surrounding GMOs (genetically engineered crops); the global reach of terrorism; and the rising population. We will also explore the broader them of globalization and answer questions such as:
Is globalization inevitable?
Will such globalization lead to a clash of civilizations?
How can the world best deal with global problems? Through state, regional or global bodies?

Globalization suggests that the world is moving towards consensus on many fronts.   Guest speakers will address global issues and the impact of globalization from the perspective of their discipline

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion of this course, students will:
1)    Gain awareness of global issues and cultures
2)    Demonstrate understanding of the interconnection among various disciplines
3)    Describe and discuss the values of global thinking
4)    Articulate the concept of interdependence as it applies to the world today
5)    Demonstrate awareness of the variety of disciplines within Global Studies.
