Text: Human
Biology, 7th edition, Sylvia Mader, McGraw-Hill, 2002
Objectives: During a comprehensive study of the systems of the human
body, students will come to understand more fully how their daily activities
affect their health now and in the future.
Students will relate disease to loss of homeostasis. Contemporary issues
in human biology will be explored and discussed so that students may make sound
healthcare decisions.
Evaluation: 5 Tests during the semester (drop lowest) 100 points each
Quizzes
(drop lowest) 15-20 points each
Assignments (2 or 3 during the semester) 20-25 points each
Short
term paper 100 points
Final
Exam 200 points
Grading: A 91 - 100%
B 81 - 90%
C 71 - 80%
D 61 - 70%
F 0 - 60%
Tests and Exams: Tests may
include multiple choice, matching, diagram identification and short essay
questions. See the course schedule for
test dates. The final exam will be
comprehensive and similar in form to semester tests. Quizzes will be short and announced ahead of time. Since the lowest semester test grade and
quiz will be dropped, no make-ups will be allowed. If more than one test or quiz is missed, the student must arrange
a meeting with the instructor.
Assignments: Most
assignments are readings in the text book.
Students should complete all reading assignments before coming to
class. Written assignments will
occasionally be required. No late work
will be accepted. Absence is not an
excuse for not knowing about an assignment.
Call or email me for missed work.
Term Paper: A short term
paper will be required. Due dates may
be found in the course schedule.
Details for this paper will be distributed in class. No late work will be accepted.
Attendance: Students are
expected to attend all lectures.
Absences in excess of the equivalent of two weeks of class meetings will
result in an "F" for the course.
Keys to Success: 1)
Prepare for class by reading the assigned text material, doing assignments and
getting to work on term papers early.
This is the most important way to succeed.
2) Review your notes frequently, not just before a
test. Put knowledge in long term, not
short term memory!! 3) Ask questions in class or make use of my
office hours. Get help when you need it
- from me, from each other or from the ACE Center. I am happy to help or just get to know you.
