Background
I am a lifelong St. Louisan although I have spent time in Washington
and California. I
received my undergraduate degree in English from the University
of Missouri-St. Louis where I
helped publish the first student art magazine, gallerie, containing original
stories, poems, art, and photography by UMSL students.
I did graduate work at the University
of Missouri-Columbia and Webster
University where I received my
Masters of Arts degree in Literature. While a graduate student at Webster
University, I was the first
assistant editor on the newly created Webster Review, now in its 30th year of
production.
I have completed post-graduate work
through Cal State
University, studying
Interdisciplinary Humanities: literature, music, architecture, history,
and film.
Along with my wife, Professor Gayle
Feng-Checkett, I have co-authored two writing textbooks: The Write
Start: Sentences to Paragraphs and The Write Start: Paragraphs to
Essays.
My interests include gardening, astronomy/science, and reading.
COURSES I TEACH
Course Descriptions
Developmental Writing I – 095 is a pre-college level writing course
the aim of which is to re-mediate basic writing weaknesses such as grammar
and sentence structure. The coursework also focuses on paragraph
structure. Essay organization also is studied, with one or two short
essays written near the end of the semester.
Developmental Writing II – 096 is a pre-college level writing course
focusing on writing skills to prepare the student for the first college-level
writing course – 101. English 096 includes a brief review of grammar,
sentence structure, and paragraph organization, but the main focus is essay
writing. Five longer essays are written during the semester.
English Composition II – 102 is an advanced college composition course
emphasizing critical thinking, analysis, argumentation, and in-depth research.
Part of this course is literature-based, meaning that poetry, short stories,
and plays are used to model instruction. A long research paper is due
at the end of the semester.
