I am originally from southern California and received my B.A. (Comparative Literature and Spanish) from the University of Redlands in 1974. I received my M.A. (English with a minor in Spanish) from the University of North Dakota and continued my graduate work with studies in Teaching English as a Second Language. My special interests in teaching are in Composition, Comparative Literature, and Teaching English as a Second Language. My husband, Professor Lawrence Checkett, and I have written two developmental writing textbooks published by Cengage ( The Write Start series). I also enjoy music, and I play cello in the St. Louis Civic orchestra.
