Course Description: Eng. 102 is an advanced composition course. Writing assignments will be based on assigned reading/discussion /evaluation of  essays, short stories, poetry, and drama. Students will learn to read, analyze, and research topics related to these assignments, and practice the corresponding required writing skills.  (For more details regarding course objectives, see departmental handbook).

 

Assignments:  Guided Writing in Class (Critical Thinking projects)

                     Homework Exercises

                     Reading Assignments

                     Essay Exam

                     4 essays, including final research project/exam

                                              

Grading: Your grades will be based on  points received for the above assignments. You will also receive credit for in  class activities and discussion; therefore, outside preparation is not only essential for your grade but for the success of  the entire class. All assigned reading/homework is due at the beginning of class. Failure to do so may result in being marked absent. This course requires significant out of class reading, writing and thinking. Please bring your questions to class. If you have serious problems understanding course material or writing assignments, please see me during my office hours.  In order to receive credit for late  assignments, you must make advance arrangements with the instructor. All assignments must be turned in in order to pass the course. Emergency absences when papers are due will only be excused with verifiable documentation.

 

Support Services: Any student with diagnosed problems with reading/writing is

                            eligible for testing, tutoring, and assistance with test taking and

                            writing. Please see Pam Bova, who will then arrange for appropriate

    services privately with your instructors. The ACE center also has  tutors       available to assist students with revision/study skills.

 

Format:  *All  assignments done outside the classroom must be typed, double spaced   

                with  your name, date, and assignment number in the upper left corner.

                 Correct MLA form is required.

              *If assignments are more than one page long, connect the  pages with a staple, 

                paper clip, or folder.

* If you would like your final essay mailed back to you, please submit it with  self-addressed, stamped 8/11 envelope

 

Attendance: Class participation is an essential part of this course and will be reflected in                          your grade.  See me if you miss more than 2 class periods to discuss

                   whether or not you will be able to fulfill the course requirements. For each         

                    absence after 2, you will lose 30 points from your total grade.
