Course Description and objectives: English 101 is designed to "help prepare college students for the rigorous writing demanded in college level courses" (English Dept. Handbook). We will work on a variety of writing tasks including summary, analysis, argument and research papers. The course will require students to practice the skills of documenting/citing sources used in research. In addition, students will discuss and analyze assigned reading selections, expanding critical thinking skills. The readings will focus issues of diversity in America, through the works of Spanish-American writers, as well as works on related topics.

Assignments:  Guided Writing in Class

              Homework Exercises

              Reading Assignments

              4 formal Essays ( 1 Essay Exam)

              Quizzes as necessary

Web CT Bulletin Board assignments (required)

Grading:  Your grades will be based on a total of points from the above assignments. (The first two essays may be revised). You will also receive credit for in class activities and discussion; therefore, outside preparation is not only essential for your grade but for the entire class. In order to receive credit for late work advance arrangements must be made with the instructor. Homework assignments must be completed on the assigned date. Failure to do so  may result in being marked absent. (Some assignments will be designated as “tickets to admission”, meaning that students who do not have the assigned work prepared in class will be marked absent). Extra credit assignments (50 pts) will be announced in class, depending on campus activities for the semester. All major assignments must be turned in order to pass the course.

Format: *All essays and assignments done outside the classroom         must be typed, double spaced, with your name, date, and assignment number in the upper right corner.

*If assignments are more than one page long, connect the pages with a staple, paper clip, or folder.

         * If you would like to receive your graded final essay, please bring a SASE (stamped self-addressed envelope) to class on the day the paper is turned in.

Attendance: Class participation is an essential part of this course and will be reflected in your grade. See me if you miss more than 2 class periods to discuss  whether or not you will be able to fulfill the course requirements. After 1 absence, you will lose 20 pts per absence from your grade total. *Summer classes, particularly those in the 5 week session are very intensive; each class period is the equivalent of one week of the regular semester. Attendance must be weighed with this in mind.

Support Services: Any student with diagnosed problems with reading/writing is eligible for testing, tutoring, and assistance with test taking and writing. Please see Ms. Pam Bova in Student Services (ADM 1206), who will then make appropriate (private) arrangements for you with your instructors. Additional support services are available in the ACE center (First Alert/Tutoring/Computer software/ESL).
