CATALOG DESCRIPTION: Introduce the student to the accounting cycle. Basic concepts covered include double-entry bookkeeping and an examination of income, expense and balance sheet statements. Cash receipt, cash disbursements, accounts receivable and accounts payable are emphasized. Intended to be the first accounting course for students who have not taken high school accounting and/or have no accounting experience. Considered the prerequisite course for Financial Accounting I.
COURSE OBJECTIVES:
Upon successful
completion of this course, the student will be expected to:
Write the definition of accounting and list the main steps of the
accounting cycle.
Using a computer, record basic business transactions and print a set of
financial statements.
Prepare a worksheet for a small business.
Using information on a worksheet or trial balance, prepare the
financial statements for a small business.
Prepare a bank reconciliation in proper
form.
PURPOSE OF THE COURSE: To provide an
understanding of principles and practices of double-entry bookkeeping
and basic accounting which takes place during a normal accounting cycle
of a business and to form a foundation for further study.
HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS :
Assignment due
dates are listed on the following schedule. They are normally due every
Wednesday or
Sunday by
11:55pm. The homework assignments will be submitted
using Personal Trainer
located on WebCT, however, you will want to first complete the homework using the Working Papers which you purchased.
Once you have completed your homework, you can submit your solutions,
using Personal Trainer
located on Web CT. Any changes to the homework assignments will be
listed on the course main page or will be emailed to you. All
homework needs to be submitted by the due date or no credit will be
given for the assignment. Credit for completed problems will be
assigned based on the amount of homework completed correctly and
submitted in Personal Trainer by 11:55pm Wednesday or Sunday evening.
Late assignments will receive no credit. Since students will be
submitting their homework online, you will receive immediate feedback as to
the accuracy of each assignment.

EXAMINATIONS:
All students are
expected to take the mid-term and final exams when they are scheduled.
However, sometimes emergencies develop that will make this impossible.
If you are unable to take an exam when scheduled, you can make up the
exam. Students are allowed to make up one exam only.
The make-up examinations will be administered in the
STUDENTS HAVE A MAXIMUM OF
ONE WEEK TO MAKE-UP THE MID-TERM EXAM FOLLOWING AN ABSENCE.
Extraordinary circumstances that may require an exception to this
policy will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis by the instructor. It
is recommended that the student provide the instructor with a note from
his or her doctor attesting to an illness or other medical condition.
****Exams will be graded within ONE week following the exam. Since
exams will not be returned to the student they will be available in my
office located in Tech 205 if anyone wishes to see theirs.
QUIZZES:
Quizzes of 10-50
minutes duration in length will be given periodically covering the
current chapter. These quizzes must be taken during the time period
allotted. Sorry-NO MAKEUP
QUIZZES ARE PERMITTED.
ATTENDANCE:
The student will
be required to attend a formal classroom setting three times during the
semester. The first time is the initial student orientation, the second
time is for the midterm exam and the last time is to take the
comprehensive final given at the end of term.
STUDENTS WITH DISABILITIES:
The college has an Office of Accessibility Services
which guides, counsels and assists students with disabilities. It is
located in room 1206 of the ADMIN blding.

COMPUTERIZED LABS:
Since MOST of your
homework problems will be completed using Personal Trainer on the
computer or Peachtree
computerized software, it is imperative that the student
have access to a computer. If a home computer is not available you are
welcome to complete your exercises in the available computer labs in
Tech 116 or the

A CLASS AND RECEIVE A “W” IS JULY 6. It is the
student’s responsibility to drop a class.
