MummieMummies, Curses, and Tales Of Terror
Modern mummy hysteria reached its peak in 1922 with the discovery of King Tut’s intact burial and the many afflictions suffered by its discoverers. Ron Pettus, assistant professor of history, will discern fact from fiction as he compares popular mummy films to the original legends conveyed in the 3,000-year-old hieroglyphs.

Projections: Grand Illusion Film
One of the first prison escape movies, Grand Illusion is hailed as one of the greatest films ever made. Jean Renoir's antiwar masterpiece stars Jean Gabin and Pierre Fresnay, as French soldiers held in a World War I German prison camp, and Erich von Stroheim as the unforgettable Captain von Rauffenstein. Five one-hour lectures based on the writings of Anne Frank, a young Jewish girl who faced Nazi persecution during World War II. One hour lectures to be held at noon in the Student Center, Room 205.

Learn how Anne Frank’s family was forced to go into hiding for fear of Nazi persecution of the Jews. This lecture covers the Frank family history from the early twentieth century through July 6, 1942. Presenter: Hal Berry, professor of history and theater at SCC

The Last Months: The Death of Anne Frank
Monday, Feb. 16
The films and plays only tell us what happened to Anne Frank during her years in hiding. There is sufficient historical documentation that allows historians to piece together the tragic story of her final days and the heroic manner in which she met her destiny. This lecture will show how her fate was as much in the hands of the advancing Allied armies as in the hands of the Nazi SS. Presenter: Hal Berry, professor of history and theater

Otto Frank and the Legacy of Anne Frank
Tuesday, Feb. 17

Even in death, Anne lived. Her diary notes found in the Secret Annex became a living memorial to her and all who suffered at the hands of the Nazis. Her father, Otto, the only survivor from the annex, dedicated the remaining years of his life to the memory and legacy of his daughter. Presenter: Hal Berry, professor of history and theater.
