Calculations Class
The Dosage
Calculations class is an 8-hour course to prepare students to take the
Dosage Calculations test required as part of the admission criteria for
SCC nursing programs. The class is also
an excellent review for the nurse who wishes to refresh
his/her calculations skills in a traditional classroom setting.
Students are expected to be proficient in basic math including
addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion,
percentages and Roman numerals prior to the first class.
The class covers the following:
- Systems of measurement including metric and apothecary
- Converting between the two systems is also covered
- Calculating drug dosages utilizing ratio-proportion,
formula and dimensional analysis
- Calculation of oral and parenteral medications including
reconstitution of powdered medications
- Pediatric dosage calculation
- Basic IV flow rates and infusion time for IV Therapy
The class requires the student to participate in class as
well as complete the assigned problems at home.
Class times and days are varied throughout the semester.
Early enrollment is encouraged as classes fill quickly.
