Certified Nursing Assistant Challenge Exam
(CNA 101-75)
Some individuals may be given permission to challenge the Certified Nurse Assistant Exam. Students who wish to challenge the exam must submit a request in writing to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services enclosing any applicable documentation. The following may be given permission to challenge the exam:
- Persons who were enrolled in an RN or LPN program for at least 4 months, or who are enrolled in this program and who have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing course, including clinical hours, within the last five (5) years.
- Graduates of an RN or LPN program who have failed their state board examination.
- Individuals who have completed a nursing program outside of the United States and are awaiting the licensure examination in this country. (Additional requirements apply).
- Persons trained in acute care sections of hospitals as nursing assistants or persons trained as psychiatric aides shall complete the orientation module with special emphasis on residents’ needs, residents’ right, orientation to the facility (CNA 102-41) and shall complete the 100 hours of on-the-job training (CNA 102-40) in a LTC facility of the LTC unit of a hospital.
- Persons trained in a LTC unit of a hospital and who have been employed in the LTC unit of the hospital for at least twelve (12) month and who submit a letter of recommendation from the administrator or director of nursing documenting their training may challenge the final exam after completing the units of residents’ right and care of the confused resident (CNA 102-41).
- Persons whose background, education, and training in gerontology and health occupations includes the components of the approved training curriculum may be allowed to challenge the final exam after taking those portions of the course as determined to be necessary by the Department of Health and Senior Services (CNA 102-40 and 102-41).
Test Requirements:
Students must:
- Be at least 17 years of age.
- Provide an acceptable Family Care Safety Registry background screening.
- Be free from tuberculosis (a current negative 2-step TB test is required).
- Be able to communicate effectively in English. Student may sign up for English as a Second Language (ESL) offered at SCC free of charge.
- Able to read at the eighth grade level.
- Provide a valid and current Permission to Challenge letter from DHSS.
Tuition:
Fees for this course are non-refundable.
Note: An additional certification fee and a passport size photo (approximately 1" x 1/1/2”) are required on the day of the test. Specifics regarding these requirements are provided to the student at the time the exam is scheduled. DHSS Permission to Challenge letters are good for four months from the date of the letter. Tests should be scheduled at least 4-6 weeks prior to the desired date to allow for processing of all applications.
