St. Charles Community College's Literacy Education Action Program (LEAP) has trained volunteer tutors to assist individuals with one-on-one reading help. This service is free and available to anyone 16 years of age or older who reads below the sixth grade level and is not enrolled in school. Students usually meet with their tutors once or twice weekly and have homework assignments to complete. Call 636-922-8444 for more information about receiving tutoring. Training is provided for volunteer literacy volunteers. Materials are provided for tutors to use with their students. Tutors learn how to assess a student's abilities, which materials to use, and how to use the materials to provide maximum progress for the student. Volunteers interested in working with GED preparation, English as a Second Language, or Adult Literacy students should call 636-922-8504. Classroom volunteers are needed to tutor students, to provide student orientation, to assist with classroom activities, and to assist with administrative duties. Teaching Opportunities
