Computers for Schools Program

Vo-Tech Department, Northeast Correctional Center
In Partnership with St. Charles Community College

PURPOSE:

  • Distribute computers to schools at virtually no cost (the only expense is to drive to Bowling Green, Mo., for pick-up).

  • Provide a place that businesses, companies, and individuals can donate old computers.

  • Provide training so that offenders can learn a marketable skill that can be used upon their release.

HISTORY:

The idea of the Computers for Schools Program was first brought to Missouri by the Late Governor Mel Carnahan.  He saw this program as a way for offenders to give back to society, while teaching them a very marketable skill that could be used upon their release.

Monies are provided through a technical grant to the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education to purchase parts to upgrade the computers that are then sent to the public schools in Missouri.

Offender workers at NECC spend six hours per day working in the Vo-Tech Department refurbishing computers and making them ready to be sent out to public schools in Missouri.

The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education (DESE) determines which schools receive computers from the Vo-Tech Department at Northeast Correctional Center.
