Why Would You Want to Major in Psychology?

Psychology--the science of behavior--helps people to understand themselves and learn how to get along with each other. Psychologists attempt to: explain why people do the things they do; promote physical and mental health; improve the work environment; facilitate learning; and help troubled persons in the community.

Students increasingly recognize psychology as a solution to major social problems--such as violence, substance abuse, poverty, and chronic illness--which primarily are problems of behavior. Partly due to this recognition, psychology is a rapidly expanding field creating new jobs in such areas as human services, health care, criminal justice, and education.

The discipline of psychology offers it all from A to Z, from controlling addictive behavior, counseling troubled teens or employees, to promoting health, treating persons with mental disorders, to saving zoological preserves and natural habitats. Besides helping unravel the mysteries of human behavior, psychologists, also, help individuals become better persons, parents, and productive citizens.
