Network Security – Fundamentals

There has never been a greater need for network professionals trained in security. Companies, governments, and organizations must guard against hackers, outsiders, and even disgruntled employees who threaten their information security, integrity, and daily business operations.

Network Security I is an introduction to network security using the router IOS and the PIX Firewall Appliance. The class combines hands-on experience, instructor-led lectures, and a Web-based curriculum. Students learn to design and implement security solutions to reduce vulnerability and the risks for revenue loss. Network Security II is a continuation of Network Security I.

These classes help to prepare a student to take the latest security certification exams, including Securing Networks with Cisco Routers and Switches (SNRS) and Securing Networks with PIX and ASA (SNPA). These two exams provide a student with 40 percent of the requirements for the professional-level Cisco Certified Security Professional (CCSP) certification.

The following prerequisites are required before enrolling in CPC 245 or CPC 246:

  • Completion of CPC 173, or
  • CCNA certification, or
  • By instructor permission

Please contact Jim Elkins by e-mail at jelkins@stchas.edu or by phone at 636-922-8207 to set up an appointment before registering for this class. Waivers are frequently granted based on a student’s experience or knowledge.

Each class meets once per week for four and a half hours for a full semester.

Students should plan on:

  • 4.5 hours per week in class
  • several additional hours in the Cisco lab outside of class
  • several hours outside of class reviewing the online curriculum
  • filling out an Engineering Journal
  • completing any labs not finished within class outside of class

Note: Classes fill up quickly. Students register on a first-come, first-serve basis. It is suggested that you register as soon as registration opens up each semester. Spring registration usually begins in October; Fall registration usually begins in April. Check with the Admissions Office for the exact dates.
