These classes help beginning, intermediate and advanced students improve English skills in reading, writing, and speaking.

Students must register with SCC Student Services, or Corporate and Community Development. Class times and locations will vary.

ESL Credit Courses

ESL 101: ESL Grammar Review
This course is a review of grammar, vocabulary, and basic composition, for ESL students. Emphasis on the study of verb forms, idioms, prepositional phrases, articles, sentence and paragraph structure, as well as vocabulary. Reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills will also be developed.

ESL 102: ESL Reading and Composition
Prerequisite: ESL 101 or Assessment
This course provides directed practice in developing college level reading and writing skills. Students will be encouraged to read, discuss, and write about, essays, and magazine articles. Advanced grammar and composition skills, including sentence, paragraph, and essay structure will be practiced. This course prepares students for ENG 101.

RDG 104: Reading for Non-Native Speakers
Directed practice in college reading skills emphasizing vocabulary, comprehension, critical thinking, reading efficiency, and reading across the curriculum.

SPE 100: Pronunciation and Communication for Non-Native Speakers of all Levels
This course provides practice on accent reduction and practice with oral communication to prepare students for Speech 101.

ESL Friendly Courses

The designation "ESL Friendly" means that ESL students will join the native speaking students in a section of a course taught by an instructor trained in ESL teaching methods. Special support and additional instruction will be offered to ESL students in order to help them meet the criteria of the course.

Support Services for Students
The ACE Center offers the Literacy Education Action Program (LEAP); individual tutoring by ESL trained instructors; computer programs in grammar, vacoabulary, and composition; as well as reference books for individual study and TOEFEL preparation.

Support Services for Teachers
The ACE Center has a selection of ESL textbooks. In addition, Professor Fayle Feng-Checkett, the ESL teacher/tutor on campus, is available for consultation, inservice, or workshop presentations on ESL, instructional Methods, Language Learning, Problems of ESL Students in the Native Speaking Classroom, and other related topics.
