Event experience Title: Visit to the New Cathedral Basilica

Anticipated Learning Outcome

To be exposed to a St. Louis landmark and the art which reflects local history.

Guidelines for accomplishment of event

Students will make a visit to the New Cathedral. The virtual tour is a good introduction. The purpose is to take a look at the various styles of mosaic work, some of which is Byzantine. The purpose is to see a historical landmark in St. Louis, MO and consider its importance to the city. (The Mosaic Museum, on the lower level, provides additional information on the construction of the New Cathedral and the installation of the mosaic artwork; hours daily 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.) Cathedral tours: Monday – Friday, 10:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Upon completing this event you should be able to . . .

Identify one or more forms of mosaic art used in the Basilica

Identify one or more of the individuals portrayed in the mosaics and discuss their connection to: Christianity, Catholicism, the United States or St. Louis.

Discuss the significance of the suspended hats
