Event experience Title: View the Film – HOTEL RWANDA

Anticipated Learning Outcome

Students will gain an understanding of the relationship of economics and economic power to complex social and economic issues in Africa and how they relate to current issues in other parts of the world.

Guidelines for accomplishment of event

After viewing the film, consider the following questions:

  • What were the economic conditions that contributed to the situation portrayed in the film?
  • What role does economics play in racism and how is this demonstrated in the film?
  • How could such a thing have happened?
  • How do the economic disparities between industrialized nations and third world counties impact situations such as those portrayed in the film?
  • What are the lessons learned?
  • Would the world community respond any differently today?
  • Is it happening again?
  • What is it about us that makes for such savagery? (Relate this to economics.)
  • How might changes in economic conditions preclude this happening again in the same or in some other part of the world?  Is there hope?

Write a two to three page journal entry. Share it with whomever will listen.
