SCC Competency addressed by event: Students should be able to identify, analyze and articulate their own values as well as those of others and recognize how these values affect opinions, decisions and behaviors.

Event experience Title: Visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum

Anticipated Learning Outcome.  Students will reflect on the role of race in the United States and have a better understanding of the effects of forced race segregation and the meaning of cultural institutions.

Guidelines for accomplishment of event

  • Students will visit the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and make a reflective journal entry about their impressions of the Negro Leagues and the museum. 
  • Students should reflect upon why separate Negro Leagues existed, about the players and their attitudes toward the game and the conditions under which they played and lived. 
  • In addition, students should assess the cultural role of the Negro Leagues for the African American community that surrounded them and for the fans that supported them.
  • Furthermore, students should evaluate the museum itself, its organization and its role in shaping an understanding of multicultural America.
