Multicultural/Valuing - Interview

General Education Capstone Course

Event/Experience Details and Guideline Form

Gen. Ed. Category Event should be listed under: MultiCultural/Valuing

SCC Competency addressed by event: Consider multiple perspectives inherent in other cultures, recognize distinctive viewpoints and biases, deal with ambiguity, and articulate an informed position

Event experience Title: Interview World Traveler or Immigrant

Anticipated Learning Outcome.  Successful completion of this project will identify differences in cultures around the world.  Students who have meaningful discussions with others from a different culture will recognize how varied the world is and become exposed to other ways of living and thinking that, although may be different than their own, are successful and positive.  Exposing these differences will highlight characteristics of their own culture that are interpreted differently by those outside of the United States.

Guidelines for accomplishment of event

  1. Identify someone who has either traveled extensively to another country or was born or raised in another country.  Do not make your selection based on a short vacation.  Choose someone who has spent more than 1 month in another country.
  2. Make an appointment with this person so you will have a designated time and time span to ask questions and get answers without interruption.
  3. Go to the interview prepared with specific questions to ask.  Include, but do not limit yourself to the following ideas:
    1. Identify the country or region of the world.
    2. What was your purpose for spending time in the other country?
    3. What differences do they recognize between the U.S. and the other country?  For example, are there differences in greetings? Courtesies? Morals? Family relations? Entertainment sources? Dress? Religions? Attitudes toward work? Climate? Topography? Political ideology? and any other idea that interests you.
    4. How do these differences affect or change the culture
    5. Why did they move to this country if they are an immigrant? Or would they like to move to the other country if they were just visiting? Why/Why not?
