Multicultural Valuing - Lecture


General Education Capstone Course

Event/Experience Details and Guideline Form

Gen. Ed. category event should be listed under: MultiCultural/Valuing

SCC competency addressed by event: Demonstrate an understanding of the evolving nature of societies and the interdependence among all peoples.

Event experience title: Attendance at an internationally oriented lecture, UM-St. Louis

Anticipated learning outcome:

Upon completion of these activities the successful student will have gained improved knowledge and understanding of multicultural valuing and the personal factors that ultimately shape our world making us more alike while retaining cultural uniqueness.

Guidelines or rubric for accomplishment of event:

1. Attend one lecture from any of the following series:                                                              

1.1 - Joint Center for East Asian Studies (six colloquia annually)                                               

1.2 - Distinguished Lecture Series (four lectures series)                                                 

1.3 - E. Desmond Lee Global Collaborative Seminar Series (five seminars)                               

1.4 - International Seminar Series (10-15 programs annually) on international affairs and international studies

Guidelines for accomplishment of events:

TYPE a journal entry (double spaced) of two pages for the seminar or lecture.

Consider the following:

  1. Identify differing ideological and political forcesaffecting that government and its businesses.
  2. Discover the need for law and stability while embracing a Capitalistic approachin the face of potential terrorism.
  3. Appreciate the impact of women in the work environmentand their inclusion for economic and social justice.
  4. Maturing societies will become more alike in their practice while retaining cultural uniqueness. Trade among nations makes this possible while reducing the potential for conflict (war).

For further intrapersonal insight and discovery:

  1. What implications do your reactions to this event (seminar, etc.) have for your personal life?
  2. What generalizationscan be drawn from these insights?
  3. Based on your new understanding of this culture, can you better accept the why of what they dowhile not necessarily agreeing with their actions?
  4. Consider possible negative stereotypesyou may have about the culture in the lecture; write these down and detail what you might be able to do about them. (assuming that change can be personally productive for you.)
