Event Details and Guideline Form
Event/experience title: “Reading, Writing, and Viewing the
Conflicts in William Faulkner’s short story and film,“Barn Burning.”
General Education category event should be listed under:
Humanities.
SCC competency addressed by event: Articulate an informed
response to popular or classical works in the humanities.
Guidelines for accomplishment of event:
- Read the short story, “Barn Burning,” by William Faulkner (on
reserve reading in the library).
- Watch the film version of “Barn Burning” (in reserve at the library).
- Write a page and a half paper on the plot summary of the short story.
- Write a two and a half page paper on the tensions and conflicts in the short
story, involving the young protagonist, Sarty, and his father, Abner.
- Create a picture board of photographs showing the major objects (the rug)
of the short story and of the film. The picture board will show differences
between the two mediums.
