Math Success Tutoring

Welcome to the ACE Center!
We are happy that you have decided to use the ACE Center for help. We have a staff of full and part time math learning specialists with academic degrees as well as peer tutors to help you succeed in math classes.

We would like to explain our procedures for receiving tutoring assistance. It is important for you to understand that this is a tutoring center and not a homework center. Your homework needs to be done elsewhere.

The tutoring session is intended to supplement class instruction. It is not a substitution for class attendance or faculty office hours, nor is it emergency preparation for exams. Tutors cannot work problems on take-home exams or quizzes. Your tutor is not a professor and will not teach you the material but will help you use techniques and resources that may prove successful.

For a complete list of the math tutoring policies in the ACE Center, visit our tutoring policies page.

Tutoring should be used to help you:

  • comprehend mathematical concepts
  • understand specific problems
  • develop good time management techniques
  • build organizational skills and problem-solving strategies
  • learn to use your graphing calculator
  • direct you to other available resources

To receive tutoring services:

Come into the ACE Center and schedule a time to meet with a tutor for a 25-minute session. Appointments cannot be made by telephone—you must come into the lab and sign up. We are open morning, afternoon, and evening hours throughout the week and Saturdays during the fall and spring semesters. Tutors are available during these times. However, you need to schedule ahead to guarantee a session with a tutor.

You can sign up for a maximum of four half-hour sessions per week. You are allowed a maximum of two sessions per day. Make sure you sign up with a tutor who can help you with the particular math course you are taking. We have posted a list of the tutors and the courses they tutor. Up to two students may sign up for a tutor per session.

To best utilize the tutoring session:

  • Seek help early, and, if possible, stay with the same tutor throughout the semester. Know where you need help.
  • Review your notes, work through your homework assignment, and come prepared with specific questions.
  • Bring your book, assignment, course syllabus, pencil, eraser, and paper.
  • If you missed a class, make sure you watch the video and read the textbook before your tutoring session. You should also get the notes from the missed class. The ACE Center has videos and CDs which correspond to the chapters in your textbook. You may only watch the videos and CDs in the ACE Center, but the circulation desk in the library has videos and CDs to check out for home use.
  • Don’t get behind. Stay current with your assignments.

You are encouraged to work with a study group. Many students have found study groups to be a valuable tool in their academic success. Even if you can find just one other person from your class to work with, you will benefit from the support and the sharing of knowledge.

If your class has been assigned a math coach, it is a great opportunity to use the scheduled coaching sessions. To view a list of current coaching sessions, visit our coaching sessions page.
