Dear Online Student:
Spring 2008
Welcome! You are enrolled in BAS/CPT 103-N3-Microcomputer
Applications at St. Charles Community College. This course will
introduce you to the newest version of the Microsoft Office
applications. After this class, you should be able to create flyers
and letters, develop financial spreadsheets, create effective
presentations, and design a database and query information contained
in it.
This section is offered online; this gives you time and place
flexibility. It does require self-discipline on your part to do the
required work without having scheduled classes. The objectives and
assignments for this section are the same as its on-campus
counterparts. Be sure your schedule allows you the time to complete
all work on time – late assignments are not accepted. Keyboarding
skills are needed to be successful in this class. If you cannot
touch type, you may want to consider taking a class in keyboarding
before this one.
We will use the computer and Internet for most of our interaction
and exchanges so you will need a computer able to access the
Internet. You will also need Microsoft Office 2007
Professional which can be purchased from the SCC
bookstore with academic pricing. Purchasing from the SCC bookstore
will be your least cost option for obtaining the software, if you
choose to purchase it. The computer lab (TECH 116) in the Technology
building at SCC also has the necessary software and hardware to
complete this course. Since there are so many significant changes in
this newest version of Microsoft Office, you will be
required to complete all assignments in Office 2007 and you will be
tested using Office 2007 when you come to campus for tests.
Any assignments completed in another version will not be accepted.
Please make note of this now and plan accordingly.
If you purchased your textbook from the SCC Bookstore, you should
have received a trial version of Microsoft Office 2007 that
will work for the entire semester. If you do not want to overwrite
your current version of Microsoft Office, please make sure
you follow the on-screen directions carefully as you install the
trial version. It will allow you to install Microsoft Office
2007 without deleting your current version of Office. By doing
this, you may uninstall the trial version when it expires and you
will still have your previous copy of Microsoft Office
available.
Orientation Information:
The course
orientation information will be placed online the Wednesday before
classes begin. You will receive an email from me about that same
time; to avoid any delays in beginning, BE SURE you
have your correct email address on file with the
college.
Exams:
All exams are
given on campus. There are online quizzes and review tests
that are available in WebCT and may be assigned as part of weekly
assignments, but all application unit exams will be given in person,
on campus according to the following schedule. Attendance is
mandatory; an absence for the final exam will result in an “F” for
the course.
Exam 1 (Word and
Excel):
Wednesday, March 5 at 2:30 p.m. - TECH 110
Exam 2 (Access):
Wednesday,
April 9 at 2:30 p.m. - TECH 110
Final (Word, Excel, Access,
PowerPoint):
Wednesday, May 14 at 2:30 p.m. - TECH 110
You will need the textbook by the start of classes in order to
stay on schedule. You may get the text for the class from the
bookstore either in person, by telephone, or online via at
www.stchas.edu/bookstore.
WebCT courses will not be available to students until 5 working
days prior to the start of the semester.
I look forward to working with you.
Sincerely,
Andrea Compton
