Advanced Clinical Calculations (NRS 150)

This class will teach students to accurately perform advanced clinical calculations in pediatric, critical care and medical/surgical settings. The advanced clinical calculations class is open to practicing RNs and second year ADN students.

Subjects covered include

• Calculating dosages medications measured in units including heparin and oxytocin.
• Titrating IV medications and perform critical care calculations.
• Administering insulin including mixing insulin and using a sliding scale.
• Calculating dosages based on weight and body surface area for adult and pediatric patients.
• Administering IV push medication including PCA pumps according to physician orders and safety guidelines.

Course Requirements

Students are expected to review the conversions and formulas used for basic dosage calculations and IV drip rates and be proficient in basic math including addition, subtraction, fractions, decimals, ratio and proportion, percentages and Roman numerals prior to the first class.
