Guidelines for accomplishment of event

Think of the definition of a family.  What constitutes a family?  Utilize the Internet and your own experience to come up with a definition of family then click on the following link.

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/defines-family-children-americans-survey/story?id=11644693

This link highlights the changing acceptance of what defines what a family is and the function of a family. Typically people’s beliefs are reflected in the media. So your task is to identify ways in which television’s portrayal of the family “unit” has remained the same or changed over time.

Utilize the Internet to find two - three shows that represent “family” life from today (or last 2-3 years) as well as two - three shows that must be from an earlier time period (10 years or more.) Internet links such as www.hulu.com or http://archives.museum.tv/archives(which has older television shows. It may require a log in which does not require personal information) can be useful.

Once you have examined the article and the television shows, reflect on what appears to be the changing dynamic in defining family. Write a minimum four page paper that attempts to compare the presentation of the family in television shows of today and of 10+years ago. Do they seem to reflect the changes that are suggested in article? Take note of not only who or what makes up the family but what kind of conflicts does the family appear to be having? Are there similarities and differences on how these conflicts are resolved? Does family composition seem to make a difference in the types of resolutions presented? What impact does the changing and evolving family “unit” seem to play in what is presented on television and how might it reflect or drive societal attitudes and beliefs about the family unit. Focus more on these questions and only use the television shows as examples to support your research and your position. do some more in-depth research to explain how television is a mirror of society and societal issues. Be sure to include the television shows that you used in writing your paper.
