Event Title: Submit Creative Work to SCC’s Mid Rivers Review

- Identify and apply the aesthetic standards used to make informed judgments in various fields in the humanities.
- Articulate an informed response to popular or classical works in the humanities.
Guidelines for accomplishment of event:
For this activity, you will submit at least one original work to the Mid Rivers Review, SCC’s literary journal. In addition, you will read and respond to selections from previous editions of the publication.
- Visit the Mid Rivers Review website for submission information.
- Carefully read the requirements.
- Note the submission deadline.
- Contact Jacqueline Gray (jgray@stchas.edu) if you have questions.
- Before you prepare your original work for submission, read past editions of the Mid Rivers Review. These editions are on reserve at the SCC library’s circulation desk.
Browse through the selections and pick two pieces that are similar in some way to the work you plan to submit to the journal.
- For your journal, you should do the following:
Respond to the two selections from the journal. Explain the subjects they address, and analyze them for content. Some questions to consider: Why did you choose the pieces? In what ways do they reflect your original submission? What metaphorical language is used in the pieces? What imagery is apparent in the work? How do their forms impact their contents? What are the themes of the pieces? What were the authors attempting to convey? What qualities do you think made the pieces successful submissions to the journal? Etc.
- Next, reflect on the content of your own original submission. Some questions to consider: What inspired you to write the piece? How much revision has this piece undergone? How has it evolved from the first draft to the final? In what ways has it changed? Is this piece a viable candidate for the Mid Rivers Review? Why or why not? Etc.
- Your final journal should be approximately 2 pages, double-spaced. Attach a copy of your final submission to the journal. In addition, attach at least 1 earlier draft of the submission.
- Lastly, submit your work to the Mid Rivers Review.
