St. Charles Community College
Certificate of Specialization
Certificates of Specialization are for people who desire information
or skills in a specific area that is usually related to their current job.
Students must complete specific program requirements as listed under each
program in the catalog. They can usually be completed in a short period of
time. The credit hours earned can be applied toward a Certificate of Achievement
and/or an Associate of Applied Science degree in the related field, should
the student wish to continue study.
A Certificate of Specialization contains a minimum of 15 and
a maximum of 29 credit hours, with the actual number to be determined by
the program area.
All existing institutional policies applying to first time
freshmen, will apply to any first-time freshman seeking a Certificate
of Specialization.
- A first-time student, taking 6 or more
hours, is required to see a counselor and take the placement assessment tests.
(While students are strongly encouraged to follow the placement recommendations,
it is only required if they need to take a course with a prerequisite skill
level, or if they place into Success Semester, i.e., low level assessment
in all three areas.)
- A first-time freshman taking 9 or more hours (5 or more
in summer) is required to take COL 101.
Individual program areas decide which, if any, general education
courses are required for a particular Certificate of Specialization. Students
will be required to meet all prerequisites for general education courses
included in the certificate.
Credit Hour Requirements for the Certificate of Specialization
- A minimum of 15 credit hours, in the area of specialization, must be taken at SCC.
- Articulated (high school) credits can be counted toward this 15 credit minimum, but only after the student has completed a minimum of 6 credit hours at SCC with at least a 2.5 grade point average for courses taken at SCC.
