Once the Indian wars were over, the government introduced boarding schools throughout the reservation system of the nation. Initiated by friends and enemies of the native peoples, the goal was to assimilate native children away from their traditional values and customs. The process of forcing assimilation turned into a tragic violation of the civil rights of innocent children.
Native American, D.Z. Iron Wing, the great-grandson of the Lakota holy man, Black Elk, was himself one of the victims of a system that lingered well into the 20th century; he will provide an insight into that era and how it impacted his life.
Hosted by Hal Berry, professor of history and theater. Presentations will be given by members of the psychology and sociology programs.
