First Time International Students

  • Obtain an "International Student Application Packet" and submit an application to the Office of Admissions and Registration.

    • Complete the TOEFL test. A minimum score of 173 is required for the computerized version. A minimum of 500 is required on the written version, and a minimum of 61 is required on the Internet version. SCC does not accept TOEFL waivers. An official score report must be submitted to the Office of Admissions and Registration. To signup, take a practice test, or for more information see www.toefl.org.
    • Submit official transcripts from high school and all colleges attended. Transcripts must be translated into English and include course descriptions, final grades, and an explanation of the grading system.
    • International students are required to submit an Affidavit of Financial Support that certifies adequate funds are available to support the student throughout the course of study under normal conditions. The form must be notarized and no older than one year. A certified current bank statement should accompany the Affidavit of Financial Support.
    • Complete the "Conditions of Enrollment” statement - must be received before an I-20 will be requested.

  • Once all documentation and TOEFL scores are received, admissions prints the I-20 (approval to study at SCC) form and mails it to the student in their home country, along with a letter explaining that the student must meet with the international student coordinator and take the Academic Skills Assessment.
  • When the student receives the I-20, he/she must pay the SEVIS (Student Exchange Visitor Information System) fee, and make an appointment for an interview with their closest U.S. embassy or consulate. Bring a passport, a receipt showing the SEVIS fee has been paid, and copies of financial documents.  The SEVIS fee can be paid at fmjfee.com.
  • After the interview, the embassy may or may not issue the F-1 visa.
  • The visa may be issued up to 90 days before school begins, but the student is only allowed to arrive 30 days before school begins (i.e., Spring semester begins in January – an international student can come into the U.S. no sooner than the December before.)
  • Students are required to complete the SCC Academic Skills Assessment prior to enrollment for the first semester. After completing the assessment, an advising appointment with the International Student Coordinator is required.
  • Tuition and fees (at the out-of-state rate) are due in full by the payment due date. Nelnet Payment Plan Option is not available to International Students or their sponsors.
  • Students must submit copies of their passport F1 visa, and valid Form I-94 (arrival-departure record) when they meet with the International Student Coordinator. SCC reserves the right to deny admissions to any student with an expired Form I-94.
