Math Tutoring

We are happy that you have decided to use the ACE Tutoring Center for math tutoring. We have a staff of full and part-time math learning specialists with academic degrees as well as peer tutors to help you succeed in math classes.

Services

The purpose of the ACE Tutoring Center is to assist St. Charles Community College students in their learning. It is meant to supplement class time and instructor office hours. The ACE Tutoring Center is a wonderful resource and is best utilized when following these guidelines.

Who is Eligible

Tutoring for math is available only to students currently enrolled in a mathematics course at SCC.

Scheduling Appointments

SCC students can schedule a time to meet with a tutor for a 25-minute session in person or by calling ahead.

Students can schedule up to four sessions per week up to one week in advance; back-to-back appointments will not be allowed.

Appointments will be cancelled for students who are ten minutes late, and the next student waiting will be helped. Three no-shows and/or cancellations will cause restrictions on making future appointments.

Preparing for Your Session

Students must study the material and begin the problems before working with a tutor. The ACE Tutoring Center is a tutoring center, not a homework center. Homework should be done elsewhere.

Students who need extensive review should use the appropriate learning aids available – websites, dvds, computer software programs, etc.

How Tutoring Works

Tutors will work and explain examples only from the text and/or class notes. They will also give study tips and answer specific questions.

Tutors will not assume responsibility for completing homework, but rather will seek to help students understand the concepts involved. Tutors will not assume responsibility for covering material when a student misses a class.

Tutors are required to follow the methods taught in class. Students must have their class notes so the tutors can consult them to determine the instructor’s preferred approach. The methods presented in the textbook will be the second choice.

ACE Tutoring Center tutors will not work problems on take-home exams or quizzes.

Policies

• SCC student I.D. is required for any services or materials used in the ACE Tutoring Center.
  
  
• Students are asked to check in at the front desk when using any of the ACE Tutoring Center services or materials – even if only for a moment.
  
  
• Cell phones should not be used while in the ACE Tutoring Center; please silence the ringers.
  
  
• No food, drink, or children are allowed in the ACE Tutoring Center.

Tutoring should be used to help you:

• Comprehend mathematical concepts.
• Understand specific problems.
• Build organizational skills and problem-solving strategies.
• Direct you to other available resources.

To best utilize the tutoring session:

• Seek help early, and, if possible, stay with the same tutor throughout the semester. Know where you need help.
• Review your notes, work through your homework assignment and come prepared with specific questions.
• Bring your SCC student I.D., book, assignment, course syllabus, pencil, eraser and paper.
• Don’t get behind. Stay current with your assignments.
• You are encouraged to work with a study group. Many students have found study groups to be a valuable tool in their academic success. Even if you can find just one other person from your class to work with, you will benefit from the support and the sharing of knowledge.
