Hello Students! Welcome to the Fall 2013 semester at SCC and the online course entitled "Nutrition for Sports Performance" (PHE 252)! I am Rebecca Levine and I will be your "facilitator" for the course. I am here to guide and direct you through the course and to answer your questions about the assigned material.

This course will prepare the student to understand the concept and components of nutrition as it relates to physical activity, exercise and the athlete. Students will understand the relationship between the basic concepts of nutrition and exercise, and their involvement in the application of general health. Participants will demonstrate an understanding of energy, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, fluid and electrolyte needs during physical activity and exercise, and understand the roles of vitamins and minerals in exercise and health. They learn and demonstrate proficiency in body composition assessment techniques and utilize nutrient and activity analysis software to analyze their own diets and activity levels, and that of an athlete. Chronic disease and disordered eating in regards to the athlete will also be reviewed.

Textbook: Nutrition for Sport and Exercise, 2nd Edition (2012 Edition), Dunford & Doyle, Wildman, Miller; Thomson/Wadsworth Publishing Company, Diet Analysis + (version 6.0) software *Computer with internet connection.
Your work week runs from Monday at 6 a.m. to the following Saturday at 11 p.m. Please print the Syllabus and Course Schedule so you will know what is due during what dates and times. Basically, you will have so many chapters, exams and assignments each week. The dates next to the exams explain the ONLY times the exams are open for you to take. I WILL NOT re-open exams once they are closed. The exams will be graded as you go except for the essay questions which I will manually grade. The dates for each week explains what chapters need to be read. There are Study Guides online for you, as well as power point presentations for each chapter for you to use to organize each chapter. Exams will cover information on the study guides, but you are responsible for all information in each chapter.
Class officially begins August 17, 2013.
Class officially ends with completion of the final exam by December 14, 2013.
This course is not independent study. It cannot be done at your own pace! You will have a weekly schedule of assignments and due dates. Due dates are not optional and cannot be extended. This course also requires that you are able to time manage and be self-directing in many ways. An online course provides you with a great deal of flexibility, but that can be a problem instead of an asset for some students. You need to consider this before starting a course of this type. In addition, this course moves very quickly and will require that you are self-disciplined and stay current with your assignments. If you sign up for this class, you are agreeing to be self-motivated and disciplined to complete the required work at the pace subscribed by the facilitator.

Take a moment to look at the Nutrition for Sports Performance Homepage and read the syllabus first. Then, you may want to browse the book. The book store can assist you in locating and purchasing the text. Our book is fun, excellent and comprehensive, but you don't have to know everything in it. The PowerPoint slides on the homepage can help you summarize the reading materials. The chapter goals, which are listed on every first page of a chapter in the text, will make your focus easier. Also, completion of the chapter study guides will keep you more focused on the material that is expected to be learned. When this Moodle course opens, browse the webpage so you know your way around and you know what to expect.
Do your best to stay ahead of your assignments and try to finish them early to take the time pressure off of yourself. I WILL NOT accept late assignments. The biggest challenge of an online class is staying up with the work and being disciplined to do your work every week. Be patient when you send me an email because I don't always check it all day and outside events may be occurring. But, I will respond as soon as possible. There is a learning curve the first couple of weeks in navigating the class but things will go well for you once you get used to the routines of the class. You will like the convenience of learning at home and you will learn a lot of things you didn't know about health. How much you learn is ultimately up to you and how much you put into the class! Use all the resources you have available to you and you will do well. Do your best, have fun and enjoy the process!
