MUS-111-N1/N3 Music Appreciation

Spring 2013

Dear Online Music Appreciation Students,

My name is Gene Ditch and I will be your guide through Music Appreciation, MUS-111-N1/N3. This is a semester online course and provides a unique opportunity for your introduction to the world of music through the advantages of modern technology. The course covers the basic concepts of music and music history from the Middle Ages through the 20th century.

There will be no mandatory on campus orientation meeting this semester. Please email me through your Moodle email with any questions you may have about getting started. I will send out an email that gives you information about how the course operates. This will be through your Moodle account, so it is important that you check your Moodle email regularly as this is my main source of contact to you.

This course format is different from other online courses offered at SCC. I suggest that you make an outline of the material as you read.

You must purchase your MUS 111 course materials before beginning your work online. There is no physical textbook for the course. You will need the access card "On Music Appreciation" by Connect 4 Education. All music and video will be streaming, the textbook is online and will be accessed using this card. If for some reason you are unable to purchase it before the first day of classes, email me to let me know. The access card is available at the SCC Bookstore, in person, online at www.stchas.edu/bookstore or order by phone at 636-922-8448. You may pay by VISA, MC or Discover.

Please register your access card within the first week of the semester to avoid complications.

Once you have the card, go to your Moodle course page and click on the registration link. You may use any email account, but we would suggest using your Cougar account here at SCC. Once you have successfully completed the course registration, go back to the Moodle course page and use the Log In link to access your course.

You will complete ALL assignments. Suggested due dates are included for each assignment on your assignment page. Feel free to work ahead of the suggested dates but do not fall behind on your work. To avoid receiving a D or F grade at midterm, you must complete all course work up to and including the midterm exam on or before March 21

If you are on scholarship or you are receiving any financial aid this semester be aware that Financial Services will check throughout the semester to see if you are on task with assignments before releasing your financial aid. Not completing an assignment is not an option, and you may receive an incomplete grade in the course if any assignment is not completed. Please do not open an assessment or exam until you are sure you are ready to begin.

You will need to know how to use a computer. You need:

  • A PC or Macintosh computer.
  • An email account, preferably CougarMail as other email accounts may be identified as spam.
  • Access to the Internet.

Your computer must have the following minimum requirements:

  • PC or Macintosh computer at 120 Mhz (or faster).
  • Monitor Color settings for Thousands of Colors (or higher).
  • 32 Megabytes RAM (or more).
  • 16-bit PC Sound Card or Built in Sound for Macintosh computer and speakers.
  • 16X CD-Rom Drive (or faster).

Special Needs: Any student who needs or requires special assistance or has unique circumstances should notify me at his/her earliest convenience.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me through your Moodle email account or at gditch@stchas.edu

Connect 4 Education technicians will be your first contact for technical support.
