General Information
Syllabus overview: This course runs on a tight schedule, and all work must be completed based on server time. If you are working close to midnight on the due date, and you don’t log off before 11:59 (server time), your work will not be recorded as meeting the deadline. A key to success in anything: a deadline is the LAST possible time something is accepted, not the time to try and finish the work. Review the weights of the different assignments and the guidelines under which the class operates. I am always accessible through the Moodle.
We will be using Keyboard Mastery, the screen-based Internet version software from Ellsworth Publishing Co. The Web address to access your assignments is keyboardingonline.com there is a link from Moodle that you can click as well.
Course log in: The username and password for the current semester is stcharlesccc, and then you will need to type in the code that you will purchase from the bookstore. This is the login and password you will use ALL semester, so don’t lose it. When you log in for the first time, you will be asked to accept the agreement with the publisher. Next you should go to the profile and enter the necessary information including a phone number and an email that I can reach you at. This is critical, since we only meet a few times over the course of the semester. I will use Moodle for my course communication, but there have been times I have needed to reach someone another way.
The first 33 exercises are graded based on completion. I get a report through the software that shows me exactly which exercises/activities you completed. In order for it to record the work you do in any section, you MUST log out before closing the application. If you just close using the X at the top right, it will not record the work you did…and you will not get credit for it. I can also see the date/time (EMC server time) that the work was completed. For these first 33 exercises where you are learning or reviewing the keyboard, you will receive up to 100 points if the entire lesson is complete based on the assignment.
I will start recording timing grades as soon as the three-minute timings begin. The one-minute timings are recorded as part of the lesson and based on completion). At the end of the semester, I will average your highest timings (3-5 of them) as that portion of your final grade.
Grades will be based on accuracy and formatting beginning with the letters/memos lessons section of the text. Each session will be worth 100 points, 50 points for accuracy and 50 points for formatting.
Tests will be a combination of True-False, Multiple Choice, Short Answer, Timed Writings, and Keyed Documents. All tests will be taken on campus at the scheduled time. A make-up exam will only be granted under the most extenuating circumstances.
The key to success in this class is getting the work done on time…it is not difficult work, but it does take a lot of time. Being that this is an online section and we don’t meet regularly, that means it takes a lot of planning to get the work done. Remember, an on-campus student is going to spend three hours in the classroom and likely some outside time to get the work done.
