BIO-280-W1 Nutrition Pathways

Spring 2013

Dear Teleweb student:

Welcome to Saint Charles Community College’s teleweb course BIO--280, Nutrition. The format of this course is a combination of home videos and assignments on the Web, with three mandatory meetings on Campus. My name is Zoe A. Fitzgerald, Ph.D. and I will be your instructor for this course. The pre-requisites for the course are completion of Anatomy and Physiology I and II or permission of the instructor.

Course Content

This course addresses the basic chemical and scientific aspects of nutrition and provides practical information on the major nutrients, nutritional needs during the life cycle, and the relationship between nutrition and lifestyle. It profiles real people in real situations utilizing experts and professionals associated with nutrition to reveal to students how nutrition and lifestyle choices can have an impact on their lives.

Course Assignments

The course is taught with the same high standards as an on campus class. The grade in the course is based on the following assignments:

  1. Quizzes over the chapters and videos; these are submitted online and you will receive your grades online.
  2. Two Diet Analysis; these are turned in at midterm and final.
  3. 12 worksheets assignments that are turned in online.
  4. Midterm is taken on campus.
  5. Final is taken on campus.

Important Dates

The dates and times for the three mandatory meetings on campus are as follows:

Orientation

  • 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 8, in TECH 202, OR
  • 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, in TECH 202.

Midterm

  • 7 p.m. Friday, March 22, in TECH 202, OR
  • 10 a.m. Saturday, March 23, in TECH 202.

Final

  • 7 p.m. Friday, May 10, in TECH 202, OR
  • 10 a.m. Saturday, May 11, in TECH 202.

You may bring a calculator to midterm and final. There are math problems.

Orientation

At orientation I will tell you about course content, and how to do your Diet analysis program. You also will be given instruction on the use of Moodle, and how to do and submit online assignments.

Course Materials

  • Textbook: Whiney and Rolfes, Understanding Nutrition, 13th edition – required.
  • Maness, Telecourse Study Guide for Nutrition Pathways – highly recommended.
  • CD-ROM Diet Analysis 9.0 or higher – required.
  • Videos (or DVD) can be checked out for the semester at the library (LRC) – required.

Computer and Math Skills Requirements

What you need for the course:

  1. You need to know how to use a computer. You will be accessing the course over Moodle and you will receive an orientation to Moodle at the first meeting and your password. During orientation you will obtain your password and submit a practice course assignment. We will have a few exercises to review the various components of Moodle; however; we assume that you have some solid computing skills.
  2. For example, you should know how to use a word processor, be proficient in file management, know how to attach a file to an email.
  3. You need an Internet connection and an Internet browser.
  4. You will need Windows software (XP, or higher).
  5. The Moodle program has its own email capabilities so you will be able to send messages to other students and private email to the instructor.
  6. You need to know how to do percentages, metric system, conversion of measurement units, and use of a calculator.

As your course facilitator, I will be available to answer questions and discuss the assigned material. You can reach me by email or come by during my regular office hours.
