MUS-112/234-N1 Jazz Appreciation/Jazz History

Dear Online Jazz Appreciation/History Students,

My name is Rebecca Swett and I will be your guide through Jazz Appreciation/History, MUS 112-N1 or 234-N1. This is a semester long online course and provides a unique opportunity for your introduction to the world of jazz music through the advantages of modern technology. The course explores the earliest origins of jazz from Creole roots in Louisiana through blues, ragtime, Dixieland, big band, swing, be-bop, cool jazz, avante garde, Latin jazz, and fusion.

There is no mandatory orientation meeting this semester. Please email me with any questions you have in getting started. Please register for the class within the first week of the semester to avoid complications. Spring session starts on Jan. 22, so you must register by Jan. 29. This course format is different from other online courses offered at SCC. I suggest that you make an outline of the material as you read.

You must purchase the course materials before registering online. For this course you need the "On Music Jazz" by Connect 4 Education access card. All the materials you need are in one package. All music for listening is streaming, the textbook is online and will be accessed through the course.   The access card is available at the SCC Bookstore, in person, online at www.stchas.edu/bookstore or order by phone at 636-922-8448. You may pay by VISA, MC or Discover.

Once you have the card, go to www.connect4eduation.com and click students, then registration. You may use any email account, but we would suggest using your Cougar account here at SCC.

All course material needs to be completed by noon on May 11, 2013. You will complete ALL assignments at your own pace, there are no exact due dates. Not completing an assignment is not an option and you will receive an incomplete in the course if any assignment is not completed. Please do not open a quiz until you are sure you are ready.

***For those students enrolled in MUS 234, you have an additional assignment that you will need to get from me via email due by noon on May 3, 2013 in the Humanities building Room 203.

You will need to know how to use a computer. You need:

  • A PC or Macintosh computer.
  • An email account preferably Cougar Mail as other email accounts may see the emails as spam.
  • Access to the Internet.

Your computer must have the following minimum requirements:

  • PC or Macintosh computer at 120 Mhz (or faster).
  • Monitor color settings for thousands of colors (or higher).
  • 32 Megabytes RAM (or more).
  • 16-bit PC sound card or built in sound for Macintosh computer and speakers.
  • 16X CD-Rom drive (or faster).

Special Needs: Any student who needs or requires special assistance or has unique circumstances should notify me at his/her earliest convenience.

If you have any questions or comments, please feel free to contact me: Rebecca Swett, email rswett@stchas.edu.

Connect For Education technicians will be your first contact for technical support.
