Spring 2013
Dear Medical Terminology Moodle Student,
Please read this letter carefully and follow all instructions. Welcome to St. Charles Community College and online “Medical Terminology.” This course is designed to give you a foundation of the language used in the world of medicine. This class is designed to give you flexibility, but will require approximately the same amount or more time commitment as the classroom section. Medical Terminology is a fast paced, instructor paced class. Students may not set individual class paces and will have assignment deadlines.
MANDATORY SKILLS FOR MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY INCLUDE:
No computer skills will be taught in Medical Terminology. If you do not currently have the above listed skills, you will probably struggle significantly in HIT 110 online and may wish to consider transferring into a Medical Terminology classroom section or taking a class that will teach you the necessary reading and comprehension or computer skills needed and re-enrolling in online Medical Terminology after completing that class.
We will use the Internet for interaction and exchanges, so you will need access to a computer with access to the Internet (sometimes for several hours at a time) available for your use. You will need a computer microphone (SCC does not provide equipment to students for home use) or webcam. There are weekly MANDATORY assignments using this equipment beginning the first week of the semester. It will be necessary for you to access the class at least twice a week, every week, beginning the first week. There are computers on the SCC campus with all necessary equipment (microphones) for student use in the ACE center.
Make sure that you have purchased the correct book that contains your access code to access publisher interactive material. Due to publisher requirements, all books must be new (you will not be able to log in and access the interactive material, such as electronic flashcards with audio pronunciation with a used book/access code). If you have any questions about your textbook purchase, ask a bookstore employee for assistance. The course number is HIT 110-N. In order to ensure that you have the correct textbook, I recommend that you refrain from purchasing your text from a source other than the SCC Bookstore.
You may also order the textbook online. Please see the SCC Bookstore website for further information at http://bookstore.stchas.edu.
If you feel it is necessary, you may contact me at mtiemann@stchas.edu (please allow up to 72 hours for a response). Please put HIT 110 Medical Terminology in the subject line.
There is not an on-campus classroom orientation. Orientation is to be completed online, early in the first week of class, by logging into the class and viewing all the tutorials (a fast connection is necessary for this, a dial-up connection may not support this file), as well as reviewing all posted information in the Moodle discussion board. After the semester has begun, please submit all assignments and contact me via the Moodle e-mail tool only. Please e-mail me EARLY during the first week for any questions.
Please click on the link below and take the quiz to learn how well you are suited for online education:

Moodle learning management system will be available to students by the start of the semester.
I look forward to a learning experience for all,
