CPT-115-N1/N2/N3 Introduction to Data Processing

CPT-115- Introduction to Data Processing

Spring 2013

Dear Student:

Welcome to Introduction to Data Processing! This course is a general introduction to the concepts of computer systems. Included are a study of the evolution of the electronic computer industry, major hardware components of a computer system, software applications, an overview of systems analysis and design, and an introduction to major computer languages.

You must review the online orientation in order to be sure you know how to access and navigate Moodle. The course includes four components, a Midterm Exam and a Final Exam for determining your grade. The Midterm and Final Exams will be completed online. Moodle is used for informing the student of their grade status and assignments and for reviewing class lectures (which uses Adobe Reader).

  • The first component is Chapter Exams. There are 13 chapter exams that will account for 25% of your grade.
  • The second component is Laboratory Assignments with 10 assignments that will account for 25% of your grade.
  • The third component is the Visual Basic for Applications project which will account for 15% of your grade.
  • The forth component is the HTML project and will account for 15% of your grade.

Visual Basic for Applications (Microsoft Office) is used to complete one project. If you do not have Microsoft Office, you may complete the projects in the computer lab (TECH 116) or download the Visual Basic 2010 Express programming language from the Moodle Course download page.

The HTML project, where the student will create three Web pages, is completed using the Windows Notepad or a free downloaded Notepad++ application available on the course menu.

The Midterm Exam accounts for 10% of your grade.

The Final Exam accounts for 10% of your grade.

The online nature of this course is designed to give you a great deal of time and place flexibility in taking this course. It does require a great deal of self-discipline on your part to do the required work without having a scheduled class. We will use the computer and Internet for most of our interaction and exchanges, so you will need a computer able to access the Internet throughout the semester. I will not be available for a face-to-face meeting, but am always available by phone or email (see bottom of page).

The Midterm and Final Exams for this class are online and details for taking them are in the course syllabus.
