Distance Learning Class Critical Information

COM-270-N1 Media Literacy

Spring 2013

Welcome to the Internet course, Media Literacy. Class officially begins on Jan. 22, but the course will be available at least a week in advance so you can become familiar with the syllabus and options. This course focuses on varying approaches through which students can develop sensitivity to media messages and also to enhance their appreciation of the media.

My name is Carol Richardson and I’m a full professor of communication/media studies. I’ve taught college-level classes for over 30 years and find that Media Literacy is really my passion in teaching. Along with teaching Media Literacy, I’ve taught Radio Production, Scriptwriting for TV and Film, Introduction to Mass Communication, Introduction to Broadcasting, Public Speaking, Broadcast Journalism and Oral Communications. I taught full time until 2007 and now enjoy teaching as adjunct faculty; I am looking forward to teaching here at St. Charles Community College this spring semester.

A few pieces of information before class starts:

  1. The required text book is MEDIA LITERACY: KEYS TO INTERPRETING MEDIA MESSAGES, by Art Silverblatt, 3rd Edition. ISBN: 978-0-275-99258-3 (paper).
  2. This course requires the same amount of study time as an on-campus course. You will be able to set your own schedule for studying and taking exams within a set time frame. All assignments, group assignments and exams are due by specific dates. All tests are essay formatted and timed.
  3. This course is taught in our new Learning Management System – Moodle.
  4. Email, via Moodle, is the best way to contact me since this is an Internet course.
  5. I will try to respond to email questions within 24-48 hours on weekdays.

I look forward to working with you this semester.
