PHY-111-H1 Introduction to Physical Science

Physical Science Hybrid Course – Summer 2013

Dear Hybrid Enrolled Student:

Welcome to Introduction to Physical Science (PHY 111-H1).

Physical science will introduce basic concepts in physics, chemistry and geology. This course is an excellent choice for non-science majors. I hope you enjoy the work you are about to undertake in this introductory, college-level course. Hybrid courses are partially independent study courses and partially on-campus classroom study.

Internet classes require more self-motivation and discipline than traditional college classes. In many ways this course is harder than its on-campus version, and will require more work and especially more reading on your part (in part to make up for the hours of lecture missed each week). Please keep current on all assignments (readings, videos, quizzes, etc.). On-campus meetings will be required for all exams and review sessions. Traditional lectures are not given for this hybrid course.  Approximately two hours per week will be required on campus.  During the on-campus time, questions will be answered, reviews done and tests administered. Tentative review and test dates for the summer 2013 session are as follows:

  • 9 a.m. June 10 – Introduction to physical science course, Administration Building, Room 2107
  • June 17 – No on-campus meeting
  • 10 a.m. June 24 – Review and Test 1, Administration Building, Room 2107
  • 10 a.m. July 1 – Review and Test 2, Administration Building, Room 2107
  • 10 a.m. July 8 – Review and Test 3, Administration Building, Room 2107
  • 10 a.m. July 15 – Review and Test 4, Administration Building, Room 2107
  • 10 a.m. July 22 – Review and Test 5, Administration Building, Room 2107
  • 10 a.m. July 29 – Comprehensive Final Exam, Administration Building, Room 2107

As a hybrid course, you will need access to a computer, an Internet connection and browser, and some basic computer skills. If you are not comfortable with computer technologies, you may want to consider taking a traditional on-campus physical geology course. In any case, I hope you will pursue your interests and complete a course in geology.

Please Note:

This course will be taught in SCC’s Learning Management System, Moodle.
