MAT 121 – N1 & N4: Intermediate Algebra

Spring 2013

Math 121 Online Students:

Please carefully read this letter regarding critical information for MAT 121- N1 & N4. My name is Behrooz Vakil and I will be your “course facilitator”. My role is to help guide and direct you through this course.

The objectives for the online Mat 121 are the same as the on-campus Intermediate Algebra sections. There are weekly due dates for assignments and the course is not self-paced. Online students should plan to

Spend 12-16 hours weekly to invest in this course (four hours that you would normally spend in class during a semester, plus the expected 2-3 hours of homework for every hour of class).

Approximately one week prior to the beginning of class, orientation materials will be posted for your course on your SCC Moodle account (moodle.stchas.edu).

It is the student’s responsibility to carefully read all orientation materials prior to start of the class as assignments will be due starting the first Monday of classes.

The MyMathLab is the electronic platform for this course. If you have not used MyMathLab in your past math courses, be sure to familiarize yourself with this online learning tool as soon as the orientation materials become available. You will be instructed to register onwww.pearsonmylabandmastering.com website before you start the course. There is a tour on how to use MyMathLab features on this site.

You can contact me in the following ways (please do not send me E-mails through Moodle):

  1. E-mail me at bvakil@stchas.edu
  2. Leave a message on my voicemail at 636-922-8347

You are required to attend campus for two meetings.

Arrange your schedule now to attend midterm exam and final exam:  held on campus on the following dates:

Required On-Campus Midterm Exam (Picture ID is required):

6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday March 12, 2013 in ADM 2117

Required On-Campus Final Exam (Picture ID is required):

6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday May 14, 2013 in ADM 2117

In order to sign up to use MyMathLab, you must have an e-mail address and a MyMathLab access code. MML access code for this course will be available for purchase in SCC bookstore. Please complete the above purchase as soon as the orientation materials are posted on Moodle, but no later than the first day of class. The book used in this course is Intermediate Algebra 11th Edition, by Lial/Hornsby/McGinnis. You are not required to purchase a hard copy of the course textbook since the MML access code allows you to have access to the online version of this textbook.

An online course provides students with a great deal of flexibility, but there is an added level of difficulty and responsibility when learning math online. You need to consider this before starting a course of this type. Please click on the link below and take the quiz to learn about how well you are suited for an online education. http://stchas.smartermeasure.com
