From recycling and composting, to alternative transportation and renewable energy, people of all ages will have fun and learn the advantages of living a greener lifestyle at the Living Green Expo and free electronic recycling event at St. Charles Community College. The event is open to the community and will take place from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday, June 16, in SCC’s red parking lot.
Free electronic recycling will be provided onsite by EPC (Executive Personal Computers), with the exception of televisions and monitors for a $10 fee. No appliances, such as washers, dryers or dishwashers, will be accepted.
“The Living Green Expo is open to the community and will offer a great time for the whole family,” said Chris Breitmeyer, vice president for academic and student affairs. Breitmeyer leads “Team Green,” a campus-wide committee that focuses on green and sustainability initiatives.
Guests will have the opportunity to view a 2012 Chevy Volt and other hybrid vehicles without having to visit multiple dealerships. Family-friendly exhibits such as a community recycled art project, face painting and Segway rides and EVie from the St. Louis Science Center will be on display. EVie is an electric truck that includes fun ways to learn about energy basics, electric vehicle technology and related environmental concerns.
A tree planting ceremony in recognition of the college’s 25th anniversary will kick-off the event at 10 a.m. in the SCC Campus Plaza. The ceremony will be about 30 minutes and will celebrate the accomplishments of the college and provide a glimpse into its plans for a successful, sustainable future.
There will be educational presentations on native landscaping, green flooring options and composting/recycling. Door prizes and giveaways such as trees and tree seedlings will also be available.
Exhibits and booths will include the St. Peters Recycle City, Habitat for Humanity of St. Charles County ReStore, Microgrid Solar, Missouri Department of Conservation, St. Charles City-County Library District, Shaklee, City of O’Fallon Stormwater Management, Cuivre River Electric Cooperative, The Missouri Botanical Gardens EarthWays Center, Ameren Missouri Pure Power, Henges Interiors, as well as groups from SCC, including the SCC Foundation and Alumni Department, Outdoors Club/Green Club, Team Green and 25th Anniversary Committee.
The Living Green Expo will be held on the red parking lot at SCC, where the parking lot itself includes environmentally friendly features, such as permeable pavers, which filter storm water run-off into the ground. The lot also has solar lighting and is surrounded by more than 500 native trees and plants to absorb run-off rainwater.
Expo sponsors include General Motors and EPC. A limited number of sponsorships, exhibitors and presentation openings are still available, starting at $100. For more information, contact Joy Dufrain, SCC continuing education project coordinator, at 636-922-8474 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
