SCC to Offer New Culinary Series of Classes This Fall

Ignite your senses this fall with the new culinary class series offered by the St. Charles Community College Continuing Education Department. All classes will be held on the SCC campus.

“Spices” will feature four classes, each costing $45, or $145 for all four. The classes will be held once a month on Tuesday evenings from September-December. All classes will be taught by Carol Hurst, who has been in the food business for more than 30 years. She and her family own the Olde Town Spice Shoppe on Historic Main Street in St. Charles.

The following classes will be offered:

• Canning Basics, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Sept. 18: Discover the basics of water bath canning, refrigerator canning and the freezer preservation method. Make a personalized jar of canned vegetables and some delicious freezer jam to take home.
• One Lump or Two (Tea Education and Tasting), 6:30-8:30 p.m. Oct. 16: Learn the differences between the many types of tea; its health benefits; and how to store, brew and serve. Enjoy sampling both hot and cold varieties in class and take samples home to enjoy.
• Feature Foods From Dr. Oz, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Nov. 13: Dr. Oz has piqued interest and awareness of healthy ingredients. Explore items like grains, nuts, teas, spices, sweeteners and berries. Sample and gather recipes to make healthy lifestyle changes at home.
• Beyond the 12 Spices on Your Spice Rack, 6:30-8:30 p.m. Dec. 4: Want to spice things up? Look beyond your traditional spices and taste a broader array of savory herbs and spices to enhance your cooking.
